Ok, so after setting the $LJHOME env var, i run the bootstrap perl script, it does it's thing. i make sure everything checks out with my modules. all set. i add a bit to my httpd.conf:

PerlSetEnv LJHOME /home/lj
PerlRequire /home/lj/cgi-bin/modperl.pl

So far, so good.

Configure everything just like in the documents.. done.

apachectl stop, and then start.

BLAM! Pelted with errors. No big deal, just a few missing packages.. Mime-Lite, Unicode, etc. No biggie. Make short work of those with apt.. perfect.

Restart apache again... this time it works. Copy the contents of the htdocs dir to /var/www (my doc-root.)

Visit http://lie.ath.cx

WOOT! IT WORKS! create user "bob". excellent. change from default style and check out my journal:

"The page cannot be found
The page you are looking for might have been removed, had its name changed, or is temporarily unavailable."

Bogus. As if I didn't dislike M$ enough, seeing one of those M$ error pages while using firefox on debian tweaked my nipples the wrong way.

Anyone have any idea what would cause journals to go tits-up right after changing the styles?

Nevermind. Figured out the problem. Somewhere along the way I missed a "ljsite.com" url replacement. dooooh.

Account Validation [Jun. 10th, 2004|08:21 am]

Apparently my ISP _really_ doesn't like it if I try to run my own smtp server. They want me to send everything through theirs.

Glad to know I didn't screw up on configuring sendmail.

all better. (though disgustingly slow on anything involving email now.)

Exactly which mail server does LJ use? For some reason new accounts at lie.ath.cx don't get validation emails. I'm pretty certain it's a mail server issue, since I used to have php forums up and those never sent the validation emails either.

If I don't have the proper mail server set up, or if I horribly screwed up the config, what would the repercussions be for turning validation off completely until I figure out the problem? (If that's even possible)

I'm a bit confused as to how I would go about changing page content. I've tried to re-read the documentation... but my brain is horribly fried right now. (cron emails, missing package notices, etc etc etc ETCCCCCCCCCC)

Anyone have a problem with random.bml not working? My first instinct was to check random.bml and see if there was something that needed to be configured first. I then saw that line about if something goes wrong, take them back to the site root. I can't figure out exactly _what_ went wrong though. the only thing I can think of is the line that says htdocs/users. Since I don't use htdocs/users, (/var/www/users) i changed it. Still no good. Any ideas?

Error: You don't have access to change a user's capability class.

Anyone know what causes that? I can't figure that out at all. (that's the error i get when trying to change user capabilities under /admin/capedit)

Sorry for all the posts today, but I've been one busy little bugger with this. :)
