Hi everyone,

I run my own website with Dreamhost as the hosting service. I don't have a dedicated machine, I'm on a shared hosting plan. From looking over the requirements to install Livejournal on the server, it appears I need mod_perl. Dreamhost has this to say in their mod_perl section.

"We do not support mod_perl on our shared hosting plans.
We do support mod_perl on our dedicated servers though!
We're sorry about this. There are several problems with allowing mod_perl in our shared hosting environment. mod_perl can hog too much memory if code isn't properly written. It has the potential to introduce a great deal of instability to our systems. We are not anti mod_perl - we use it extensively in our own web panel, however we don't feel that supporting it in a shared environment is scalable."

Is that pretty much saying that I can't run the LJ software on my current hosting plan? It would seem that way, but I'd like to doublecheck, just to be sure. If so, is there any other free software with a similar visual appearance and features to Livejournal that would work on such a plan? I'd prefer to use Livejournal since it's familiar to me and exactly what I want, but if that's not available, might as well make do the best I can.

Thanks in advance for any advice.
