What date is today?

So my next step in fiding out LJ is not really localized is that event dates are always displayed in English, regardless of locale settings. (dayshort, daylong, monshort, etc.)

I did a quick search on ljviews.pl and it looks like the date comes from the database, is that right? If that is the case my only hope is to have MySQL spit out dates on my language, right?
